A map of Moghulistan

Chagatal control of Transoxiana and the reunion of the Chagatai khanate proved fleeting. Following the untimely death of the 34-year-old Chagatai khan in 1363, the Moghuls loyal to Tömür left the newly-conquered territory, which in turn fell into the lap of the Qara'unas, one of the powerful self-governing Mongolian tribes ruling the western part of the decaying Yuan Dynasty. The Qara'unas governor of Balkh, Amir Husayn, was then blindsided by his Transoxiana-born brother-in-law turned nemesis, Tamerlane, who turned Husayn's subjects at Bulkh against him. Tamerlane went on to capture Samarkand in 1366, and in 1370 he murdered Husayn, stealing his brother-in-law’s realm, coveted title, and wife, Saray Mulk Khanum.
